Transform Werner Park from a baseball field to a football field

PAPILLION, Neb. (WOWT) – For the first time this week, Werner Park, home of the Omaha Storm Chasers, has been converted from a baseball field to a football field for the Union Omaha’s opener.

Executives on the team, like GM Matt Homonoff, loved what they saw.

We couldn’t imagine – we tried – but we couldn’t imagine what the final product would look like until a short time ago, and we think it is fantastic, and we very much hope our fans will enjoy it. ‘okay,’ Homonoff said.

The process was overseen by Chief Custodian Derek York.

He knows how important every little detail is during the conversion.

The turf that is placed on the earth must be fair so that there is no possibility of a football player being tripped. Conversely, grass in the outfield that is beaten by football players will require additional care.

In a typical year, the conversion between soccer and baseball could happen a dozen or more times when both teams are in season.

“Yeah, that definitely challenges us when you have two sports, twice as much wear. It just makes us a little more proactive in our management styles, ”said York.

Having to complete the conversion only once this year without a quick delay allows York on the ground crew to master the process and be ready for 2021.
