Strong Girls Soccer Field Returns for 2022 I-10 Shootout

The top teams from the eight brackets of the 2021 I-10 Shootout Women’s Soccer Tournament return for this year’s tournament, scheduled for January 13-15 at Katy ISD venues.

Of the 64 teams competing, 70% are last spring playoffs, some of which have had outstanding runs. The tournament field includes Class 6A State Semifinalist Memorial, playing in the Falcon Bracket, and State 5A Champion Dripping Springs, playing in the Tiger Bracket. Fourteen other teams from this year’s tournament have reached the regional quarter-finals or better in 2021.

Teams must win three consecutive matches to claim the title in one of eight brackets, which feature varying degrees of competition. Those who advance to the bracket final must play on January 15 at Legacy Stadium or Rhodes Stadium.

The Spartan, Falcon and Cougar brackets are some of the toughest to cross every year. This year is no exception as District 19-6A and regional champion Seven Lakes host seven more playoff teams, including regional semi-finalists Tomball Memorial and Beaumont West Brook.

Tompkins’ group hosts six playoff teams, including Memorial and Jordan, making their I-10 college debuts. The Cinco Ranch roster includes eight playoff teams, including TAPPS Division I runner-up St. Agnes, Region III-6A runner-up Cy-Fair, and Region III-5A semi-finalist Foster.

The tournament was adjusted to a pool game format in half of the brackets last year, although four finals were still played.

West Brook beat Mayde Creek in the Ram Finals last year, Lumberton beating Foster for the Maverick title, Ridge Point beating Tompkins in the Falcon Finals, and Cy-Fair beating Friendswood for the Cougar crown. Three of those four champions are in the same bracket this year.

Taylor was the unofficial Mustang champion last year, finishing as the only 3-0 team in the pool. Langham Creek had a similar run in the Panther Bracket but will compete in the Cougar Bracket this year.

Katy and Elkins were undefeated in the Tiger game last year, including a head-to-head draw. Both are coming back into range this year. The Spartan Bracket included undefeated teams Seven Lakes and St. Agnes.

The I-10 Shootout features 48 junior varsity teams, bringing the total number of players participating in the event to over 2,200. Proceeds from the event fund the I-10 Shootout Scholarship Program, as well as supporting local high school football programs through their school athletic booster clubs.
