SPEARFISH – The Spearfish University women’s football team lost 2-1 to Yankton on Saturday afternoon at the Black Hills Energy Complex in Spearfish.
“Especially in the last 15 minutes, we played very lively,” said Spearfish head coach Justin Griffith.
Yankton took a 1-0 lead from Cora Schurman’s penalty 13 minutes to go into the first half. That was the score at the break.
“We played very solid, but we couldn’t finish the chances we had,” Griffith said of the first half.
The Gazelles extended their lead to 2-0 on Keira Christ’s scoring in the second half.
Spearfish entered the scoreboard when a free kick from Tessa Lucas found the back of the goal. This brought the Spartans to 2-1 with 6.5 minutes remaining.
Brooke Peotter shot twice on goal during the stretch run. Yankton goalie Alexandra Schmidt was forced to make diving saves.
Spearfish defeated Sioux Falls O’Gorman 2-1 in their game on Friday. Griffith summed up his team’s performance over the weekend.
“I thought we played well,” Griffith said. He added that the team played well in the first half against O’Gorman, but the team did not possess the ball well in the last 40 minutes.
Spearfish is now 3-3 on the season, and Griffith has spoken about the team so far.
“I think we are making progress, but we still have to keep our cool and be able to better own the ball,” he said.
Spearfish will be heading to Belle Fourche on Tuesday September 7th.
