Karim Benzema elected best footballer in France in 2021 ahead of Kylian Mbappé

France Football have announced who they believe is the best player in French football in 2021 and the Real Madrid forward came first.

It has been a year of redemption so to speak for Karim Benzema, the Real Madrid striker not only scored goals at will in La Liga but also helped the French national team win the UEFA Nations League. Off the pitch, Benzema had to deal with his extortion case but on the pitch he was all busy putting the ball in the back of the net.

The now popular football magazine France Football named him the best French football player of 2021. “I became the number 9 that I always wanted to be” Benzema told the publication after receiving the award. Benzema has been one of the most consistent players in French football over the past 10 years, he has over 300 goals for Real Madrid.

Benzema’s return to the France national team after 5 years and had an instant impact on the team, his return to the national team was what pushed his appointment over the line. Benzema has scored 9 goals in 13 games for France since returning in 2021.

Karim Benzema took the award ahead of PSG star Kylian Mbappe and N’Golo Kante, who enjoyed a sensational season last year. Benzema won 26 titles during his career between Lyon, Real Madrid and France.

This season, the French striker has 23 goals in 26 games and will most likely be in contention next year for the award and be a lock for France at the 2022 World Cup.
