High school rally: Wyoming area men’s football and field hockey teams advance to playoffs
The Wyoming region’s men’s soccer and field hockey teams ended their regular seasons with impressive winning streaks that earned them the top record in District 2.
The Wyoming region beat Williamsport, 2-1, in a men’s non-championship football game on Friday to advance to 17-1 with nine straight wins by a combined margin of 49-4.
The Warriors will be the seeds of the District 2 Class 2A playoffs.
The Wyoming region shutout two winning teams during the week to close out the field hockey regular season with 11 straight shutouts and a 16-1 record.
During the week, the Lady Warriors overtook Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champion Wyoming Seminary in the race for the rankings for the top seed of the District 2 Class A. Saturday involving other teams, but the Lady Warriors had a good chance of securing the first seed.
Center-back Morgan Janeski, outside-backs Megan Beppler and Alyvia Yatsko and goalkeeper Carly Saranchuk combined to produce the shutout streak with the help of time forwards and midfielders to control possession.
Wyoming Region 2, Williamsport 1
Shawn Pawlowski scored both goals as the Wyoming region rallied at home on Friday.
Angelo Casas scored five minutes into the game to put Williamsport ahead.
Pawlowski tied the score after 14 minutes and scored the game-winning goal eight minutes after the start of the second half. Dylan Kostik assisted the goal in the first half and Sean Burke assisted in the second half.
Williamsport had a 6-3 lead on corners, but the Wyoming Area defense allowed just three shots on goal.
Hazleton Zone 5, Pittston Zone 1
Hazleton Area beat the Pittston area in a WVC Division 1 game on Friday.
The Pittston region closed their season 1-11-2 for seventh place in Division 1 and 3-13-2 with eight teams.
Pending the results of other games, the Patriots came in 10th out of 12 teams on Saturday, missing the District 2 Class 3A playoffs to eight teams.
Wilkes-Barre Sector 2, Pittston Sector 0
Lochlan Messner made 12 saves in goal for Pittston Area, which failed in Wednesday’s WVC Division 1 game.
Wyoming Zone 5, Hanover Zone 0
The Wyoming region ended a 12-0 Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 championship season with Tuesday’s win in the Hanover region.
Pittston Area 8, Berwick 0
The Pittston region routed Berwick 8-0 on Friday to complete their WVC Division 1 schedule with a 9-2-1 record.
Barring a major upset from Berwick in a game set to end after press time for this edition on Saturday, the Lady Patriots will finish second in the division behind Wallenpaupack for the second consecutive season.
The Pittston region are 10-7-1 overall and are awaiting the final say on whether they will retain fourth place in the District 2-4 Class 2A standings race for a home game in the quarter-finals.
Wyoming Zone 2, Hazleton Zone 0
Carly Saranchuk made 10 saves as the Wyoming region shutout Hazleton Area in the WVC Division 1 final on Thursday.
The Lady Warriors were second in the division with a 10-1 record.
Nina Angeli and Miranda Dominick scored the goals.
Pittston Area 2, Abington Heights 2
Pittston Area played tied with third-placed Abington Heights in the WVC Division 2 game on Thursday.
Bella Giardina and Giana Neishman scored goals to give the Pittston region a 2-0 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Quartier Pittston 4, Nanticoke 3
Madison Karp scored twice including the tying goal in the third quarter and Bella Giardina added the game-winning goal in the WVC Division 2 game on Tuesday.
Morgan Hilbert had the other goal in the Pittston area.
Wyoming Zone 1, Lac-Lehman 0
Toni Minichello scored the game’s only unassisted goal in the first quarter as Wyoming Area won at home in Monday’s WVC Division 1 game.
Carly Saranchuk made two saves in the shutout.
Hazleton Zone 3, Pittston Zone 1
Hazleton Area won the non-league game on October 16.
