Grasshoppers back on the soccer field
PRESQUE ISLE, ME (WAGM) – It’s been two long years, but the Grasshoppers soccer team was back on the training ground today. The Players and coaches were all smiles on their first training since 2019.
(Tabitha Shaw): “They go out into the community. We haven’t been out for so long just to get out and do things because of COVID. “
(Rena Young): “I’m delighted to be here today because I haven’t been here for a few years. It’s a beautiful day.
(Carl Michaud): “Athletes have been eager to replay anything for about two years. We have been allowed to return to the field, it is an outdoor event and less than 50 people and we are happy to be here.
The Grasshoppers are a mix of veteran and new players and they’ve all worked hard in the first of five practices they’ll have this year.
Michaud: “We have five new players this year and most of the old ones are back. The coaches have returned and we are ready to go. We have five practices this year. How to stop the ball correctly and how to pass the ball correctly.
Tammy Kilcollins is one of the rookies to the team. It’s her first year playing for the Grasshoppers and she’s having a blast.
(Tammy Kilcollins): “I like it a lot. It’s fun to participate in the Grasshoppers.
The Grasshoppers will also play two games against the Presque Isle Varsity soccer teams, on September 1 against the girls and on September 8 against the boys. RJ Wilcox can’t wait to face the Wildcats
(RJ Wilcox): “Throw a ball into a goal and try to beat the Presque Isle girls and boys. I will say an example. Someone is in the goal I’ll use it. If I can do it and block it right away and we can fight like the last two years.
All gamers have something different that they value the most
Kilcollins: “The race
Shaw: “Kick the ball. “
Michaud says they still have room for more players if there are Special Olympians who are interested in joining
Michaud: “Our limit is 30 players, we currently have 22 players so we have room. If you’ve played before and want to replay, come see us, give me a call and we’ll put you on the team.
Coaches and athletes hope this is only the first step towards returning to competition. Michaud says that over the past few weeks the players have been biting and asking about other sports as well.
Michaud. : “They ask when the Snowdogs will start and when the bowling will start. We are not sure yet about these events because they are inside events. Grasshoppers for now and we’ll continue from here.
