Dog runs on the field during the Chile-Venezuela soccer match

The Copa América Femenina, the biggest football tournament involving women’s national teams in South America, will take place next month. In preparation, two teams due to leave but who are in opposite groups – Chile and Venezuela – faced off on Saturday night at the Estadio La Granja in Chile.

Venezuela ended up with a 1-0 win thanks to a second-half goal from Mariana Speckmaier. Before that happened, both teams had to deal with a rather rude interruption, as a dang dog ran onto the field and apparently thought receiving pets from everyone would be the best thing in the world.

Even a few photographers on the sidelines and one of the officials had fun. I really like the 52-second mark, when you can see in the distance Chilean keeper Christine Endler patting the dog’s belly right after the ball comes out with a huge smile on her face, probably because it’s extremely funny. The dog seeks out a few more pets, and when an effort is made to get him out of the field, he flies off to the delight of everyone in the stadium.

Eventually, two Chilean teammates – Yenny Acuña and Javiera Toro – managed to settle the situation. I wish nothing but the best for this dog for the rest of time.
