A soccer ball could have caused the suspect to bail out Ky’s stolen school bus.

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – Whitley County deputies say they are looking for a man who stole a school bus and then destroyed it.

It happened around 11 p.m. Monday night in the Boston community near the Tennessee state line.

The school bus was parked overnight at Boston Elementary, likely because its driver lives nearby.

Surveillance video shows the suspect somehow entering the bus, finding the key, which may have been left in a compartment, and leaving.

You see the man looking towards the back of the bus as if hearing something. What he hears is probably a soccer ball that keeps rolling, but not when he looks back. A few minutes into his ride, while the bus is still in motion, he jumps out and the bus crashes.

Whitley County deputies say they are looking for a man who stole a school bus and then destroyed it.

“Apparently he [the bus] was pretty damaged,” said Chief Deputy Tim Baker of the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office. “I spoke to the guy above the bus garage, and they had to replace some doors on it.”

The Whitley County Schools Superintendent says they are still assessing the level of damage to the bus. He says they were able to quickly make adjustments Tuesday morning to get a different bus to pick up kids who would have taken that bus.

The Whitley County Sheriff’s Office said they have a suspect and are working on other leads to make an arrest. They are also looking for evidence that the suspect may have stolen other items and boarded other buses.
